What is Family and Consumer Science?
Family and Consumer Sciences
Family & Consumer Sciences is a field of study focused on the science and the art of living and working well in our complex world. The primary areas of focus include: culinary arts, hospitality, and tourism; education and training; food science and nutrition; health management and wellness; housing and interior design; human/child development and family relations; personal and family finance; textiles, apparel, and retailing.
FCS Industries
FCS is broken into three industry pathways covering a range of careers, interests, and skills. Many students begin in a general FCS class such as Life Management prior to choosing an industry pathway to focus on throughout their education.
Family & Consumer Sciences Education
Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) and Family and Consumer Sciences Related Occupations (FCSRO) instructional programs are based on the eight content areas of the Family and Consumer Sciences Body of Knowledge:
- Child Development and Guidance
- Consumer Education
- Family and Human Development
- Fashion, Textiles, and Apparel
- Food and Nutrition
- Housing and Furnishings
- Individual and Family Health
- Leadership Development
Family and Consumer Sciences education consists of three interrelated components:
- Consumer and Family Studies, a program which provides relevant education and leadership skills for personal and family living in finding balance and satisfaction in work, personal, and family life.
- Family and Consumer Sciences Related Occupations, a program in which students build upon their skills, knowledge, and attitudes to secure and advance in fulfilling careers–from entry level to upper management– that utilize the full range of their talents.
- FCCLA is the co-curricular student organization which teaches leadership and citizenship skills to succeed in family and consumer sciences related careers and personal life.
All three components work jointly to prepare students for advanced education and high-quality careers.
